Back

January 20, 2000: John McCain argues for raising taxes for the wealthy, and wonders what you would do with a surplus January 7, 2002: John McCain regrets nothing in voting against the 2001 Bush tax cuts, implying 9/11 validated his vote. March 18, 2003: Argues against tax cuts in a time of war and no fiscal restraint on spending; wants to wait until we've succeeded in Iraq. December 29, 2007: Says he's glad he voted against the Bush tax cuts because of restrained spending in his proposal. However, in 2003 another senator had proposed restrained spending with the tax cuts. McCain had said the spending restraint would be too risky in a time of war as well. He says fiscal restraint is still out of control, but the tax cuts must be made permanent. Good luck absorbing that waffle. November 28, 2007: Informs the public that they'll just have to rely on his record instead of any promises that he would oppose and veto any attempts to raise taxes. July 30, 2008: Plainly says the worst thing you can do in these hard economic times is raise someone's taxes.
