Lord of the Ring
BackI had my friend Dennis Nygaard over here a few weeks ago and I know he collects coins and I had him look at a ring my dad made out of a German silver coin when he was in the service in Germany in WWII. Rings of this type are made by using a table spoon and lightly tapping the outer edge of the coin with the spoon and slowly rotating the coin with the other hand. After several dozen hours of tapping the coin's edge with a spoon the cumulative effect from the tapping will bell out the outer edge of the coin into a ring shape. This happens imperceptibly slow. A drill and a small file are needed to take out the center material and complete the ring. I knew about this ring for some 40 plus years. My brothers and I made similar rings using 'Shell Gas' token coins made from aluminum when we were kids trying to copy the process used in making the ring my dad made. Using a softer metal like aluminum instead of silver greatly increased the speed of making a ring from a coin. I remember trying to speed up the process with light taps of a hammer, but that mushroomed the outer edge of the coin instead of rolling it back and it made for a lopsided and distorted ring. Depending on how thick a band you want and the size of your finger, you need to choose a proper coin for its diameter. The ring my dad made was made from a 1847-1934 German Silver Paul Von Hindenburg 5 Mark Coin. This was a commemorative coin struck in 1936. My friend Dennis read the embossed lettering on the ring with his hand magnifier and we did a little web research which was unavailable the last time I looked at this ring some 40 plus years ago. If this coin stayed a coin its value would be 40 dollars. As a ring, I am not sure what its value would be. Now for a bit of history from Wikipedia Though 84 years old and in poor health, Hindenburg was obliged to run for re-election in 1932 as the only candidate who could defeat Hitler, which he did in a runoff. In his second term as President, he did what he could to oppose the Nazi Party's rise to power, but was eventually obliged to appoint Hilter as Chancellor in January 1933. In March he signed the Enabling Act of 1933 which gave special powers to Hitler's government. Hindenburg died the next year, after which Hitler declared the office of President vacant made himself the Fuhrer, or the combination of the president and chancellor
